In less than a week, Penn State lost to the legendary football coach and President of the University. And that's before taking into account money.
At Stake? Tens of millions of dollars in profits each year. Penn State raked in $ 45.2 million in revenue from football last season, ranked fifth out of all college programs in the country, according to CNNMoney. In addition, the Athletic Department, the school took home another $ 24.1 million in income is not designated to a particular team or sport–the amount derived from the sale of merchandise and sponsorship.
And the program has taken a hit. Resale price of tickets for the upcoming home Penn State game against the University of Nebraska has dropped more than 20 percent Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after the School Board of Trustees fired Joe Paterno, Penn State football coach 46 years, according to Bloomberg.
Paterno dismissed the wake of the scandal that rocked the campus and the nation when former football assistant coach frankly was criticized for not doing enough to pass on reports of sexual abuse to the Sandusky's authorities.
Penn State Athletic Department is financially independent from the rest of the University, which means a drop in the price of a ticket or t-shirt sales will not affect the academic building or pay a professor at the school. The scandal is likely to dampen still fundraising effort Penn State.
